Work

Qu Caruso works across self-portrait photography, site-responsive action, and participatory performance. His projects examine how an exposed body is observed, classified, managed, and incorporated into public and institutional space.

Self-portrait photography and site-responsive actions · 2023–present

An ongoing series placing Caruso’s unclothed body within ordinary urban environments. Through incongruous presentation, public encounter, and self-directed photography, the work examines visibility, vulnerability, gender expression, and acceptable behavior.

Incongruous

AWAY

Durational participatory performance · In development, 2026

A single-audience performance structured through observation, choice, institutional labeling, and writing accumulated directly on the performer’s body. As the encounter progresses, the body becomes increasingly documented, judged, and reclassified while the surrounding space retains evidence of what occurred.

Incongruous: Live

Projected photographic installation and live performance · In development, 2026

A live extension of Incongruous in which selected self-portraits are transformed into architectural projections and the photographed figure is removed. The nude artist and audience then occupy the same physical space, turning the photograph’s controlled observation into a reciprocal encounter shaped by proximity, bodily presence, attention, and response.

Wet Cake

Durational participatory performance · In development, 2026

A participatory live action in which audience members speak and throw assigned edible words toward the performer. As language, cake, and frosting accumulate, separate gestures become a collective residue that is gathered, transformed, and incorporated by the body, implicating the audience in the condition it has helped produce.
